The Mosquito Control Section of the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) provides direct mosquito control services to communities in 16 Maryland counties, including Prince George’s County. The primary goal of this program is to prevent the occurrence of mosquito-borne disease in humans, pets and livestock. The program monitors mosquito populations to coordinate control activities. Control techniques include breeding source reduction, public education, biological control and insecticide applications.
The spray program typically begins in late May or early June and extends through early October. The 2019 spray schedule for Prince George’s County will be posted on the Mosquito Control Program Description page when it is available.
Any resident of a community participating in the Mosquito Control Program who does not want to have his/her property sprayed for mosquitoes must complete and submit a Request for Exemption from Adult Mosquito Control Services. More information on policy related to exemptions can also be found on this form.
Unscheduled Spray Activities
In addition to the scheduled mosquito spraying services in participating communities, MDA will spray an area when mosquito-borne disease activity is detected there. This activity will be announced on the MDA Mosquito Control web page and on Twitter @MdAgMosquito. Any existing spray exemptions in these areas will be temporarily suspended.
The Zika virus is spread primarily through the bite of certain species of mosquitoes. The best way to avoid the Zika virus is to prevent mosquito bites. And the best way to avoid bites is to eliminate areas where these mosquitoes lay their eggs. See the MDA Zika Awareness & Prevention page for more information on Zika and for simple ways to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and avoid mosquito bites.
