The vaccine is coming! The vaccine is coming! This is the best Christmas gift ever. As soon as we can get vaccinated our lives will begin to return to some semblance of normal. The COVID-19 vaccine is coming and Trump is going, both at the same time. Light, as they say, is at the end of the tunnel, and what a tunnel 2020 has been.
Last week the Council had a presentation on the vaccine rollout by Health Officer Dr. Ernest Carter, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Health and Human Services, Dr. George Askew, and Ronnie Gill, Director of the Office of Emergency Management. It was two hours of sobering information of data about how the virus is impacting our residents, plans to get the vaccine distributed, and why it’s so important to get most Prince Georgians vaccinated – at least 65% of us – in order to take back our lives. It will take several months to receive and distribute them, with health care workers and those living in congregate care facilities getting them first. Prince George’s Child Resource Center Launches Family Connects
On another note of good news, the Prince George’s County Child Resource Center has launched Family Connects! Like everything, for now, it’s a virtual program, with nurses having visits with new moms to see how they’re doing and what resources they might need. Most moms just need a little encouragement and the assurance that all is well and that their experiences are typical. For families with more serious issues, these virtual visits are an opportunity to connect them with services to help. Our community is stronger when our families are healthy and whole. Prince George’s County Lynching Memorial Project
Lynching was a form of racial terrorism that is an abhorrent part of our country’s history. There were five men whose lynchings were documented in Prince George’s County by the Equal Justice Initiative. (You may have read the founder and executive director, Bryan Stevenson’s, memoir Just Mercy, which was also a hit movie.) I’m a member of the Soil Collection Committee for the Prince George’s County Lynching Memorial Project. You’ll hear more about this effort to honor the lives and shine a light on the deaths of these men. The first man who was lynched was a husband and father of six, Thomas Juricks. He was hanged by a mob on October 12th, 1869, in Piscataway. Plans are underway to have a ceremony to collect soil from the site where he was lynched, and have it displayed at The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. I’ll keep you posted as these plans progress. We’ll need the entire community to be a part of this project.
COVID-19 Emergency Order Proclaimed
This past week County Executive Alsobrooks issued an Emergency Order, stating the order was necessary to save lives and to protect the public safety and welfare of all Prince Georgians during the pandemic, and that it would help control the further spread of COVID-19. The Emergency Order can be found HERE, stating it is necessary that the County remains in an updated Phase 2.
Rescheduled Senior Meal Giveaway
The Senior Meal Giveaway for residents of Council District 5 that was postponed this past week because of weather has been rescheduled for Wednesday, December 23, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Bladensburg Town Hall. This giveaway is for seniors 60 years and older. To reserve your meals pre-prepared by Martin’s Crosswinds, please call 301-741-1961 or email: mday@co.pg.md.us.
Blood Drive in Cheverly
Give the gift of life! Blood donations are down, but the need is acute. Please help! I will be partnering with the Town of Cheverly to host a blood drive on Monday, December 28, at the Cheverly Town Hall between 10 am and 4 pm. If you’d like to donate blood, you can register HERE. If you can help, and are available to volunteer to assist during the blood drive, please sign up HERE. Every donor will receive a free t-shirt if they would like one. During this difficult time when people are wisely staying at home and not going out as much, the need for life-saving blood continues.
Scholarships Available for Student Driver’s Education
The Coalition for Public Safety Training in Schools, Inc. in partnership with the Linnel Driving School are sponsoring a FREE Driver’s Educational Scholarship Program for students who meet the eligibility requirements. The scholarship is available to students who live in Prince George’s County, attend a Prince George’s County Public High School, and are a member of the Junior or Senior class. The Scholarship Application and a Parent/Guardian letter can be found HERE. The application deadline is December 21, 2020. While the holiday season can be a joyous time, this year’s holidays will need to be celebrated differently. The social distancing necessary to curb Covid-19 can take a toll on everyone’s mental and emotional health. For our community members 65 years and over, the Maryland Department of Aging is offering a FREE telephone reassurance program. Free Covid Testing Available
Patients do not need a doctor’s prescription or health insurance to get tested, but identification is required. There will be no questions about immigration status at any of our testing sites. Testing is provided free of charge, with no out-of-pocket cost or co-payment regardless of insurance.
Prince George’s County Health Department offers FREE COVID-19 tests for individuals with or without symptoms. All County-run testing sites accommodate testing for those in a car or on foot. Some testing sites may require an appointment. Please check HERE for complete details, site locations, and schedules. Finally, I hope you are finding ways to joyfully and safely celebrate the holidays! We’ll be able to come together physically next year, and I’m looking forward to savoring being able to spend time WITH friends and family, and not on Zoom! The best insurance policy for that to happen is for all of us to follow the County’s COVID-19 holiday guidelines. This virus’ impact is severe in our County. Our County has a dashboard so the public can follow the numbers of people being tested, in our hospitals and dying of COVID-19. I’m looking forward to the upcoming days when we can add a tab on the Dashboard for the number of people getting vaccinated.

El Centro de Recursos para Niños de Prince George’s lanza Family Connects
En otra nota de buenas noticias, el Centro de Recursos para Niños del Condado de Prince George’s ha lanzado Family Connects! Como todo, por ahora, es un programa virtual, en el que las enfermeras visitan a las nuevas mamás para ver cómo les va y qué recursos podrían necesitar. La mayoría de las mamás solo necesitan un poco de aliento y la seguridad de que todo está bien y de que sus experiencias son típicas. Para las familias con problemas más serios, estas visitas virtuales son una oportunidad para conectarlas con servicios de ayuda. Proyecto conmemorativo de linchamiento del condado de Prince George’s
El linchamiento fue una forma de terrorismo racial que es una parte abominable de la historia de nuestro país. Hubo cinco hombres cuyos linchamientos fueron documentados en el condado de Prince George’s por Equal Justice Initiative.
